The title of this new release

by the Dave Weckl Band

clearly represents the great

amount of influences we can

find in all the compositions

(a little more complex than in

the past) included in this

beautiful new work. This

wonderful band includes some

of the greatest musicians of our times like Steve Weingart on keyboards, Tom Kennedy on bass and Gary Meek on saxophones. Guest musicians are also included like the great Ric Fierabracci (four tracks) on bass, Richie Gajate Garcia on percussion and the return of the guitar with Paul Pesco.

Watch Your Step is the bright opening number that immediately bring the listener in the mood of the band and clearly shows how the sound is changed from the last Perpetual Motion CD (2002) that it was slightly more produced than this one. Element Of Surprise is a beautiful half-time shuffle heavily influenced by Chick Corea's music but with a New-York-City-flavored-sound added. Dave's playing here is simply amazing and reminds me (in some ways) to his playing on Cascade, from Chick Corea Elektric Band's Eye Of The Beholder (1988). Obviously enough, the groove is so different (with new contaminations and sound) but the way Dave colors this kind of groove with the constant chat between the Hi-Hat, splashes and ghost notes is really unique and displays an unbelievable amount of taste that remains unsurpassed. Vuelo... Ok, planet Weingart now, just landed... This is the first of the three compositions by Steve Weingart that, in my opinion, really changed the musical direction of this band. This track shows a great performance from Gary Meek and the unmistakable keyboard sound from Steve Weingart and his sort of hypnotic-kind of theme that bring the band's energy really up till the end of the piece. Inner Vision is a beautiful ballad with an intense mood driven by Gary Meek's delicate soprano saxophone. What It Is (another "NYC sounding track") shows Dave's beautiful playing on a cool contemporary groove along with the great Ric Fierabracci: this is simply one of the greatest rhythm sections on the planet! Dave's playing is amazing throughout all the track and becomes simply unbelievable when he plays around that kind of "push and pull" accents that really drives the track.

Chain Reaction is based on a beautiful

Hip-Hop/Jungle/New Orleans (hard to describe) type of groove and a typical Weingart's type of theme that set the scene for a long ride.

Cascade is my favorite one. The tracks builds over a beautiful African mood and the way Dave plays here is simply amazing and unbelievable, not to

mention his unique way to make this kind of rhythms flow. Steve Weingart and the rest of the band's playing here is impossible to describe just because we are talking of some guys that are coming right from another planet. Dave's short but great drum solo at the end shows his greatness and the musical maturity he has now reached. Mixed Bag keeps the energy up and drives the listener through a road full of twists and tricks built over a beautiful groove in 7/8 that Dave plays like he only can... not to mention what he's able to play on the accents at the end of the tracks. Steve Weingart's playing here is nothing less than amazing. Down On The Corner close the CD with the right funk attitude and with Dave and Ric Fierabracci taking this groove to a very high level of interaction and musicianship. Dave's solo at the end of this tune is, again, unbelievable and it's always great to notice the ability he has to always put something new on the table...

Dave's playing on Multiplicity has reached a new level, like never before. The combination of musicality, technique, taste, definition, sound, infinite musicianship and pure quality is simply unbelievable. The band here sounds really tight and in a beautiful shape like I've never heard before.

Evolution... a word certainly used a lot but that never seemed more appropriated to describe Dave Weckl, his playing, his music and his band.

This is definitely one of the best efforts produced by one of the greatest bands of our days.
