The Dave Weckl Band / Live

Bitches Brew Club - S. Benedetto del Tronto    6/4/2002

Tonight it's been such a great night, that I wanted to dedicate a special edition of the "What's New" section. I'm just came back from The Dave Weckl Band gig, held here in Italy in a good jazz club called "Bitches Brew". The club was filled up with so many people coming from several place of Italy, due to the fact that, for the first time, Dave made only two gigs in Italy for his 2002 european tour. The first things I saw, is the brand new Yamaha Oak Custom drums that Dave is using for this tour. The size: 10x8, 12x9, 14x12, 16x14, for the toms. Bass drum: 22x17 and 18x17. Snare drums: 5,5x14 signature steel, and 13x5 signature maple. Plus he had his percussion set mounted on his left. The drums sounded really good, with great definition and with such a big low end frequencies presence. He used his new Sabian "Evolution Series" that sounded so good and fit perfeclty with his personality, and once you've heard them, you'll perfectly understand why Dave wanted them so strong. They have a real different sound compared with anything else Dave has played during all these years. Plus, he used a new double bass drum pedal, a prototype from Yamaha, with a radical different look and a nylon strip drive trasmission, instead of the usual double chain drive. It's probably the next update on pedals from Yamaha. The gig was about some tunes from "Transition" and a lot of new tunes from their new cd. The first set begun in a "shy way", with a good rendition of "Wake Up", and once the band warmed up, they launched hands and feet in a great version of "Braziluba", slowed down a lot and played with such a great intensity. Then they wanted to slow down a bit, with the execution of "Passion", a ballad that Dave dedicated to "a special person in his life", his wife, that was there with him, revealing that he's still married. After, a great new composition by Steve Weingart came. A great tune that reminded me to the Weather Report, and not titled yet, like the rest of the new tunes, and like the new cd, that it's been already recorded, and that it should comes out in June or in July, like Dave said. The rest of the new tracks were so beautiful, covering a particular style that I think is the natural consequence of what we heard on the "Transition" cd. Anyway, we should espect a great new cd. Dave and the rest of the band were in a really great shape, and Brandon, Tom and Steve were simply greats. The rest of the first and second set, flowed with great tunes played all slowed down and, again, with rare intensity.

The gig closed with a great and flawless solo by Dave (I saw Dave something like ten times, and he always played different solos with different ideas!), and with "Amanecer", played beautifully. Other highlights were: "Just for the record", with an incredible solo by Tom Kennedy, an unbelievable version of "The Chicken", with Dave and Steve really smokin' during an hard swing section in the middle of the tune, and an incredible solo by Brandon and Dave, "chatting" with their instruments. The atmosphere was so deep and intense like I've never seen in years. This was a very special night, and I saw Dave really happy and relaxed, like never before.

Thanks Dave for past, present and future inspiration.
